Apply for this courseAbout this course
This one year part-time course will provide you with an exciting and creative opportunity to explore different aspects of photography whilst also gaining a nationally recognised Level 3 Qualification without taking any exams.
We will lead you through the techniques and processes of both digital and dark-room photographic image-making. You will be taught the skills and techniques associated with these areas of the discipline and we will challenge you to explore personal ideas and concepts through a wide variety of projects. The two aspects of this course will be explored in parallel and you will be encouraged to make links in your work between the two, carrying ideas and processes across the ‘boundary’ wherever appropriate.
Our aim is to provide you with the opportunities and knowledge to investigate and explore the possibilities that these two fields offer the artist photographer. Some of the processes, techniques and materials that you will be encouraged to use, will be un-conventional, experimental and un-predictable in outcome; this course is not just about ‘playing safe’ and taking straight-forward photographs!
Initially you will be introduced to the exploration of equipment and processes through workshops and short, defined assignments; links will be made across the boundaries of the two areas and you will be encouraged to begin to define your particular areas of interest. Later in the course you will work from a more ‘open’ and personalised assignment. This will build on your broadening photographic research, to develop a range of work based on your own emerging style.
This course will encourage you to explore:
- Different contexts of photography such as; studio work, landscapes, portraiture, still-lives and lighting control.
- Different aspects of dark-room photography processes including the use of enlargers and wet developing.
- Different aspects of digital photography techniques including electronic editing systems, PhotoShop and RAW-format photo editing.
Although this course is only taught for one evening per week, as a student of the School of Art & Design, you will have access to our Study Centre and other facilities throughout the working week. To be successful on this course, you will be expected to undertake some work for the course beyond the taught hours.
Entry requirements
Whilst no formal qualifications are required, some previous experience in photography is preferred (although not essential) and obviously, a keen interest in photography is a must!
