About this course

Is the course right for me?

Are you passionate about a career in hair and makeup? Are you dynamic, creative and eager to develop specialist skills that you will set you on the path towards your dream career? Our HND in Theatrical Makeup and Costume will teach you an exciting range of Makeup, Prosthetics, Costume Design and Construction techniques that you can use to develop a top career in Fashion, Theatre, TV or Film.

What makes WCT the best?

When you choose our HND in Theatrical Makeup and Costume, you are making a big investment in your future. We don’t just offer an excellent teaching experience and first class facilities; we also introduce you to real life working environments through trips, visits and the opportunity to enter major national competitions. And that’s not all. Our students regularly work on live projects with professional film, theatre and promotional companies. By giving you an insight into everyday life in the sector, we are preparing you for a top career.

How will I learn?

The HND offers a full-time programme of vocational study lasting two years. Our course carries a strong emphasis on practical learning and focuses on developing your technical skills ready for employment. You will get plenty of opportunities to demonstrate your talent in our first-rate Art and Design studios, and you will be encouraged to use your creativity and imagination to inform your work. Don’t be afraid to experiment with new ideas!

What will I be doing?

You will develop specialist skills in makeup, prosthetics, costume design and construction. You will study period hairstyling, makeup and wig dressing, editorial hair and makeup, body painting, prosthetic applications and photographic styling.

Supporting studies in theatre and contextual history, business, presentation and drawing will underpin your practical work. We even give you the opportunity to take modules in photography and computer design!

In your second year, you can choose to specialise solely in makeup design or costume, but as our course encourages you to create “the total look” effect, most students decide to continue studying both pathways.

Additional practice of the subject is always beneficial and we encourage students to undertake personal work experience where they can.

Please note that applications must come through UCAS - our institute code is W81 and the course code is 094W.

Entry requirements

To apply for the course you need four GCSE grades A-D plus a minimum of 80 UCAS points or equivalent. These can come from any of the following:

  • An Art & Design Foundation Course
  • BTEC National Diploma in an Art related subject
  • 2 A levels
  • GNVQ\AVCE NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy or Makeup

If you do not have any of the above qualifications, please still apply, as we may be able to credit previous industry experience.

Assessment

Each Unit has specific project briefs and these will be assessed through live projects, presentations and group work.

What next?

From body painting for festivals to specialist make-up for burns-victims, make-up artistry is a valuable and artistic skill. A career in the Theatrical Arts could see you take on a range of job roles, from Wig Making and Costume Design to Special Effects and Media Makeup Artistry. This is a highly creative and specialist industry and you will need to be dedicated, patient and hard working to succeed.

If you would like to progress to higher education, you may want to consider a Foundation Degree in Make-up Artistry and Special Make-up Effects or a BA (Hons) in Specialist Makeup.
