About this course

Is the course right for me?

If you are keen to develop a specialist career in art and design, then this exciting and highly practical course will take your skills and knowledge to the next level. Your passion and talent for the industry will be rewarded with a range of specialist units, which cover subjects as diverse as installation art and fundraising to freelance work and advertising. Perfect if you have set your sights on higher education and a career as a professional artist.

What will I be doing?

Our hands-on course encourages you to apply the theory that you learn during class sessions to the practical work that you complete in the studio.

In your first year, you will learn about how art and design is used to communicate different ideas and concepts, how it is affected by contextual influences and the role played by computers in the industry. You will expand your knowledge of art and design subjects to include image manipulation, contextual studies, visual recording and public art. You will also study the work of other artists and designers to develop your understanding of the historical context of Art & Design.

In your second year, you will choose a specialist route from four options that include 3D Design Craft, Fashion and Clothing, Fine Art and Graphics.

Entry requirements

You will have, or be expecting to achieve, five or more GCSEs at grade C or above, with at least a grade C in English Language. Alternatively, you will have achieved a Merit or Distinction in a relevant Level 2 Diploma.

You will be invited to attend an interview, to which you will be asked to bring your art and design portfolio. At the interview, you will discuss your suitability for the course and plans for higher education.

Assessment

You will be assessed on an ongoing basis at the end of each unit. You will create a portfolio of your work, answer written questions and complete assignments.

What next?

After completing the course, you may want to progress to one of our undergraduate courses in Art and Design. You can choose from our Foundation Diploma in Art and Design Level 3 and 4, our Foundation Degree in Fashion and Surface Pattern or our HND in Theatrical Make-up and Costume.

Your career opportunities as an artist are limitless. You could become a Fashion Designer, Illustrator, Art Teacher, Museum Curator, Art Historian, Public Artist or even a Jewellery Designer! Whatever your dream career, let your creativity and imagination make it a reality.
