About this course

Is the course right for me?

Have you caught the knitting bug? Passionate about patterns? Keen to crochet? If you like to accessorise your outfits and enjoy homemade designs, then why not make a career out of it? As a Diploma in Fashion and Clothing student, you will be collecting, creating, thinking and studying everything to do with textiles and design. From fabric dying to machine knitting and crochet to embroidery, our course will take you on an exciting journey into the world of fashion design.

What will I be doing?

You will explore a range of specialist areas, including fabric printing, weaving, dying, knitting, pattern cutting and embroidery. Alongside your practical learning, you will study different design methods, and the contemporary and historical issues that are involved in art and design. You will also learn skills in life drawing, colour theory, visual analysis, IT and Photoshop.

In your second year, you will embark on a series of projects where you will have the chance to apply the skills that you have learned and develop your own interests and creativity.

Entry requirements

You will have, or be expecting to achieve, five or more GCSEs at grade C or above, with at least a grade B in English Language. Alternatively, you will have achieved a Merit or Distinction in a relevant Level 2 Diploma.

You will be invited to attend an interview, to which you will be asked to bring your art and design portfolio. At interview, you will discuss your suitability for the course and plans for higher education.

Assessment

You will be assessed on an ongoing basis at the end of each unit. There are no exams.

What next?

You may choose to progress to our Foundation Degree in Fashion and Surface Pattern or our HND in Theatrical Media Make-up and Costume.
