Is the course right for me?
Photography is a varied and valuable art form. We use it to remember our happiest memories and capture some of the world's greatest events. But it takes more than a camera click to make a photograph. With our hands-on course, you will learn about the different techniques of the industry. From traditional to digital, landscape to editorial, you will have a wealth of areas to explore. Photography is a dynamic medium, and the perfect way for you to express your creativity. With our course, you will be encouraged to develop your own individual style, and build on your skills and experience to help you achieve your dream career.
What will I be doing?
You will learn about both the theory and practice of photography. At the School of Art and Design, we offer a range of well-equipped facilities to ensure you get the best out of your learning experience. You will have the opportunity to use our darkroom, studio and image manipulation software to work on different projects and build your own portfolio of creative work.
You will learn about darkroom production, digital photography, studio technique, digital image manipulation, photojournalism and web design. You will also explore a range of different techniques and concepts that you can apply to your work. This will include an overview of the different practices, regulations and legal issues that affect the industry.
Entry requirements
You will have, or be expecting to achieve, five or more GCSEs at grade C or above, with at least a grade C in Maths. Alternatively, you will have achieved a Merit or Distinction in a relevant Level 2 Diploma.
You will be asked to bring a portfolio of your art and design work along to an interview, where you will discuss your suitability for the course and plans for higher education.
Assessment
You will be assessed on an ongoing basis at the end of each unit through project work. There are no exams.
What next?
If you are looking to develop your skills further, you may want to consider our Foundation Diploma in Art and Design Level 3 and 4 or a BA (Hons) in Art, Design or Media.
Photography is a versatile skill and you can choose to work in many different industries, including fashion and magazine production, advertising, journalism, sports, travel and even medicine! Many photographers work on a freelance basis, shooting graduations, weddings, portraits and other important social events. As a freelance photographer, you could be employed by a newspaper, magazine, fashion house, design studio, advertising company or government department.
