Beauty Therapy NVQ Level 2

About this course

The course helps students to prepare for employment as junior therapists, with a balance of theoretical study and practical experience. The college operates a commercial salon - Fountains - within the School of Art & Design, Barbourne. All practical skills are performed on each other at the start of the learning process and you must be prepared to receive treatments on a regular basis until competency is reached to work on fee paying cliental.

During the course, you will learn how to provide manicures, pedicures, facials, and eye treatments. You will also learn waxing ear piercing and spa duties, how to advise and consult with clients, as well as carrying out reception duties and promoting products to clients.

You are expected to achieve 95% attendance throughout the course. It is important that you have a mature and professional attitude, as the beauty profession is a highly demanding and disciplined one. Personal appearance and behaviour must be of the highest standard throughout the course. An ability to undertake home study on a regular basis is essential; this is necessary for the anatomy and physiology content and also for research based activities. Work placements can be arranged for students showing motivation, but a part time job in a salon would be most beneficial to the student and would be encouraged by staff.

You also have the opportunity to take part in Enrichment Week in January. This is a programme of seminars, additional training and trips/visits designed to develop and enhance your underpinning knowledge.

Entry requirements

Entry is not normally conditional on meeting particular grades at GCSE; however, you will be expected to have reached a reasonable standard of GCSEs in a range of subjects including English.

You will be asked to attend Fountains Salon as a client prior to interview to experience the salon environment. As part of the interview process, you will be asked to prepare a research project to demonstrate your skills, knowledge and commitment.

Assessment

Assessment is progressive and unit based with credit being given for skills as they are practiced within Fountains.

The qualification that is achieved on this course is NVQ level 2 Beauty Therapy, which is validated by the awarding body VTCT (Vocational Training Charitable Trust).
