About this course

The overall aim of the qualification is to accredit candidates’ knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles relating to book-keeping. In addition, it accredits the book-keeping skills of candidates in performing routine book-keeping tasks. Within the qualification, candidates are provided with an understanding of the basic accounting concepts upon which the systems of recording business transactions known as the ‘double entry book-keeping’ is founded and which underlies both manual and computerised book-keeping processes.

Course Outcomes:

Level 1

  • Understand the functions of book-keeping and accounting
  • Make simple VAT calculations
  • Prepare and check business documents
  • Process and record credit transactions
  • Make and receive payments through a bank current account
  • Process receipts and payments through the analysed cash book
  • Prepare a bank reconciliation statement
  • Process petty cash transactions

Level 2

  • Understand and apply basic accounting concepts and book-keeping ethics
  • Make VAT calculations
  • Recognise and use source documents
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of payment methods
  • Use a sub-divided book-keeping system
  • Account for payroll
  • Prepare checking devices, identify and eliminate book-keeping errors
  • Prepare a trial balance

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.  However, it is advisable for candidates to have reasonable numeracy and literacy skills.

Assessment

Assessment is through two examinations: a Level 1 examination of 1.5 hours (sat in January), and a Level 2 examination of 2 hours (sat in June). Both are externally set and marked.  Knowledge tests and assignments will also be required.

What next?

On successful completion of this course you can progress to the IAB Level 3 Certificate in Book-keeping.
