Is this course right for me?
Are you interested in a career as a Web Designer or Multimedia Developer? Then this is the course for you! Our HND in Computing (Multimedia Development) is a nationally recognised course and is equivalent to the first two years of an honours degree. Our course is delivered through a combination of academic, practical and personal learning, and will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to kick start your career in this exciting industry!
What makes WCT the best?
We offer hands-on experience of using Microsoft and Adobe industry standard software.
You will have the opportunity to get involved with on-programme visits to Microsoft, Cisco, Hewlett Packard, ARM and Oracle. We also have links with local universities, providing you with a choice of progression routes to complete an honours degree after passing your HND.
What will I be doing?
In the first year, you will be studying a core set of modules that will give you essential skills in network design, computer architecture, software development and website design as well as professional development.
You can then choose your modules for your second year of study, where you will further develop your knowledge and skills in design for both multimedia and web environments as well as designing and developing games.
You will study the core curriculum for Level 4 (Year 1), and these modules are determined by the course team. For Level 5 (Year 2), you will be asked to choose which modules you would prefer to study in January of your first year. Using the choices of all of the Year 1 students, the course team will develop a number of different subject option blocks. At the end of Year 1, you will then be able to choose which 3 of the option blocks to study for Level 5. Typically, it is anticipated that there will be 2 Network Management, 2 Software Development, 1 Multimedia Development and 1 Business Managment option blocks, although this may vary. The option blocks offered this year (2011-12) can be found below.
How should I apply?
You should apply through UCAS. The UCAS course code is 065G. Once your application has been received, we will invite you to a formal interview where you will meet the course team and have the opportunity to ask more questions to help you decide if this is the right course for you.
Entry requirements
To apply for this course, you will have at least three A level passes in a related subject or a BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 in IT with at least 200 - 240 UCAS points. For mature applicants (aged 21+), relevant industrial experience or vendor certification will be taken into account.
How much does it cost?
These are set as £5000 per year for UK and EU residents. Unfortunately, the government has removed funding for those who already posses an HND or Degree. Please contact us for more details if this applies to you. There are no additional course costs to pay.
Assessment
You will be assessed on an on-going basis through written assignments, individual projects, presentations, group work and assessed practical activities. There are no formal exams. You will also meet regularly with your personal tutor to discuss your progress and plan your studies.
What next?
BSc Honours degree in Software Development or Engineering.
What are my career opportunities afterwards?
You could become a Web or Games Designer. Alternatively, you could follow a career as a Games Tester, Multimedia Designer or Database Administrator.
