About this course

Is the course right for me?

Construction is a fast-paced industry that is constantly changing to adapt to new technologies. If you enjoy managing projects and working as a team then this could be the sector for you! Our HND in Construction and the Built Environment is a nationally recognised qualification that is equivalent to the first year of university study. It will provide you with in-depth and specialist knowledge of the theoretical principles, methods and practical skills you need to succeed in a professional or management role.

What makes WCT the best?

Our HND has been developed with your career development in mind and is recognised by the following institutions:

  • CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building)
  • RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors)
  • BIAT (British Institute of Architectural
    Technicians)
  • We organise professional tutorials, local work experience placements and site visits with construction specialists to give you a working insight into different sectors of the industry.

    How will I learn?

Our course offers a full-time programme of study lasting two years. We offer an exciting, varied and challenging approach to learning that mixes theoretical study with a strong vocational element.

    What will I be doing?

You will study a range of topics designed to equip with the theoretical knowledge, technical expertise and practical skills you need to work in construction.

You will learn about the methods and materials involved in construction work, including the use of mathematics to draw up plans and designs. You will also learn about topics such as land surveying, law and contracts, and quantity and surveying.

Our HND also covers healthy and safety issues, planning and regulations, and the environmental issues that relate to construction.

By the end of the course, you will have developed important planning, organisation and management skills and will be ready to supervise a team of employees, solve problems and apply your technical skills to almost any area of the industry.

    Entry requirements

We aim to make our qualifications available to everyone who is capable of reaching the required standards. To apply for the course you will need three A Level passses in a related subject or an Extended Diploma in Construction or Civil Engineering with at least 200 - 240 UCAS points. Mature applicants (aged 21+) will be considered on the basis of relevant industrial experience.

    Assessment

You will be assessed on an ongoing basis through written assignments, individual projects, group work and exams. You will also meet up regularly with your tutor to discuss personal progress and plan your studies. You will take part in tutorials, projects and work experience and have the opportunity to visit construction site projects where appropriate.

    What next?

Our HND in Construction and the Built Environment has been developed with professional and career development in mind. After gaining your qualification, you will be ready to progress to the third year of a degree programme. Alternatively, you could enter direct employment.

There are a variety of areas to specialise in, including planning and design, civil and structural engineering, construction and building services or surveying. You could work on redevelopment schemes, conserve listed buildings, or carry out structural work on highways, bridges, railways and tunnels. Or why not become a Building Surveyor or Architect? As you progress in your career, you will be able to move on to management roles that carry more responsibility and higher wages.

As a construction worker, you will enjoy a varied job role, a great deal of outdoor work and the satisfaction of completing a project and seeing the finished product.
