Is the course right for me?
Are you looking to develop a professional career in construction? Our Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction and the Built Environment will equip you with the skills and qualities you need to get ahead in almost any sector of this increasingly competitive industry. Our course is a nationally recognised qualification and is equivalent to the first year of university study. We deliver a framework of academic, practical and personal learning designed to give you the boost you need to succeed in your chosen career.
If you are looking to gain a higher-level qualification for work in a technological or management context, then this is the course for you! You may already be employed in construction and wanting to build on your knowledge and skills, or looking to turn a craft role in the industry into a technical or professional career. Either way, a HNC in Building Studies will give you an advantage in a highly competitive and ever changing labour market.
What makes WCT the best?
We organise professional tutorials, local work experience placements and site visits with construction specialists to give you a working insight into different sectors of the industry.
Our HNC is an acclaimed qualification and is recognised by some of the top professional bodies in the industry, including:
- CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building)
- RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors)
- BIAT (British Institute of Architectural
Technicians)
How will I learn?
Our course offers a part-time programme of study lasting two years. We offer an exciting, varied and challenging approach to learning that mixes theoretical study with a strong vocational element.
What will I be doing?
You will study a variety of topics such as land surveying, law and contracts, planning and regulations, health and safety, and management principles. You will gain knowledge of the methods and materials used in construction, and the maths theory that you will need to use on the job.
In addition to lectures and tutorials, you will get the chance to put the skills you have learned into practice with an exciting range of laboratory and fieldwork. You will also attend regular seminars, which will give you the opportunity to engage in lively discussions and get a good grasp of different subject areas. Along the way, you will gain helpful feedback from your tutor and work as part of a team on group projects, sharing your own ideas and gaining inspiration from others.
Entry requirements
We aim to make our qualifications available to everyone who is capable of reaching the required standards. To apply for the course you will need three A Level passses in a related subject or an Extended Diploma in Construction or Civil Engineering with at least 200 - 240 UCAS points. Mature applicants (aged 21+) will be considered on the basis of relevant industrial experience.
Assessment
You will be assessed on an ongoing basis through written assignments, individual projects, group work and exams. You will also meet up regularly with your tutor to discuss personal progress and plan your studies.
What next?
A HNC in Building Studies provides an ideal entry route to second year degree programmes in the areas of construction and civil engineering. You can also choose to convert your course to a HND with an additional year of study.
During the course, you will develop key communication, analytical and teamwork skills that will help you succeed in any job, although you may want to consider a career in the areas of construction, civil engineering or property.
You can work for a variety of employers in both the public and private sectors, including architectural and surveying practices, project management consultants, local authorities, housing associations and construction companies of all sizes.
You could become a Quantity Surveyor, a Property Manager or an Architectural Technologist. How about being an Environmental Consultant and tackling water contamination and air pollution? Or developing new transport facilities as a Town Planner? Whatever your dream job, our HNC in Construction and the Built Environment will provide you with the skills, training and experience to help you turn it into a reality.
