About this course

This qualification allows learners to become competent to industry standards in plumbing and heating. Learners are required to demonstrate the ability to perform the necessary skills and the knowledge required to be assessed against the National Occupational Standards.
These qualifications form the core element of the apprenticeship for the sector. Approximately 50% of this course is practical and your learning will be based within our Construction Workshops.
On-site assessment is required for unit 019: Applying safe working practices in building services engineering and Unit 020: Installing and maintaining domestic plumbing and heating systems.


To achieve the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating, learners must achieve 76 credits from the mandatory units. These include the ability to understand and apply the following techniques:

Unit   001 - safe working practices in building services engineering
Unit   002 - communicating with others within building services engineering
Unit   003 - environmental protection measures within building services engineering
Unit   004 - scientific principles within mechanical engineering services
Unit   005 - site preparation, and pipe work fabrication techniques for domestic
plumbing and heating services
Unit   006 - domestic cold water system installation and maintenance techniques
Unit   007 - domestic hot water system installation and maintenance techniques
Unit   008 - domestic central heating system installation and maintenance techniques
Unit   009 - domestic rainwater system installation and maintenance techniques
Unit   010 - domestic above ground drainage system installation and maintenance techniques

You will also be expected to undertake Functional Skills at an appropriate level.

This course is expected to be accredited in September 2011. Further details on unit content will be available at that point.

Entry requirements

You must be at least 16 years of age and should have completed secondary education with fair GCSE results (at least two at grade D or above, preferably in Maths and English). You should have a desire to enter the plumbing, electrical installation or other building services trades. You will be assessed for Basic/Construction Skills and will also be interviewed. As this qualification requires on site practical assessment employment within the industry is required.

Assessment

Assessment will be through a combination or practical and knowledge tests.

What next?

The NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating provides the entry route into Building Services Engineering Apprenticeships. Progression on to higher levels may be dependent on your employer obtaining relevant work for on site assessment within the sector.

Learners who have taken this qualification will be able to progress into the following qualifications:
• NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Plumbing and Heating (either gas option, oil option, solid fuel
option, or environmental technologies)
• NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Heating (either gas option, oil option, solid fuel option, or
environmental technologies)
