About this course

Is the course right for me?

Are you working in the gas trade and looking to gain a qualification? Or are you new to the area but keen to build your technical skills and experience? Our Diploma in Plumbing and Heating Level 3 is a natural step up from your Level 2 qualification and equips you with the specialised knowledge and experience you need to qualify as a skilled engineer. From fitting water systems to exploring alternative and sustainable sources of heat and sanitation, you will discover a range of new techniques that will prepare you for a great career working in plumbing, gas engineering or environmental technologies.

What will I be doing?

You will learn through a variety of methods, including lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical sessions. You will learn a range of techniques relating to domestic hot and cold water systems, central heating systems and sanitation systems, as well as relevant electrical work.

In your practical sessions, you will apply a range of installation, commissioning and maintenance techniques to systems, such as central heating and sanitation. You will also learn how to service and maintain domestic oil firing pressure jet appliances and solid mineral fuel burning appliances.

In addition to your main programme of study, you will cover the use of environmental technologies such as biomass fuel burning appliances and solar thermal hot water systems, heat pumps and water recycling systems.

By the end of the course, you will understand the core gas safety principles that you need to install natural gas within domestic buildings.

Additional Costs: You will be required to pay £25 for course t-shirts

Entry requirements

You will need five GCSE grades A-C in academic subjects, including a minimum grade D in English Language and Maths. Alternatively, you will have completed a Diploma in Plumbing and Heating Level 2 or have prior experience in the industry, working in a role with minimum supervision.

Assessment

You will complete a portfolio of your work that will show your understanding of different topics and your ability to demonstrate simple procedures. Your tutor will mark your work and give you feedback.

What next?

After completing your Diploma in Plumbing and Heating Level 3, you could become a Heating and Ventilating Engineer, Gas Engineer or Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineer. You can choose to work in industrial, commercial or domestic premises.

You may also like to consider progressing to a HND in Plumbing and Heating or a higher qualification, such as a degree in Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems.
