Engineering

Foundation Degree in Electrical Systems & Installation

Apply for this course

About this course

Is this course right for me?

Electrical Engineers design, manufacture and install equipment across a range of sectors, including construction, power, transport or the building industry. This is a dynamic industry and our Foundation Degree in Electrical Systems and Installation will teach you the skills and knowledge you need to succeed as a professional Engineer. Our vocational course has a strong practical element and you will need to be employed in a relevant industrial company to benefit from our work-based learning programme.

What makes WCT the best?

Our excellent links with employers in Worcestershire and the surrounding areas gives you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and advice from people already working in the industry. Our natural progression routes between different programmes and courses make it easier for you to improve your qualifications and enhance your learning experience, and our part time study options make it easier to fit your education around work and family commitments.

How will I learn?

Our Foundation Degree is a part-time day release course delivered over two years in conjunction with full-time employment. You will need the support of your employer to assist you with this course.

What will I be doing?

In your first year, you will gain underpinning knowledge of subjects such as maths, science and business. You will explore different design processes and investigate the materials and processes used in manufacturing components.  You will also study a unit in Electrical Principles, which will help you to develop the mathematical calculations required in complex electrical systems. You will also learn how to safely use and operate electrical systems and equipment.

Your second year is based on the practical application of engineering topics such as Inspection, Testing, Instrumentation, Control and Lighting Applications. You will also complete an individual project which will enable you to investigate theoretical ideas involved in company practice.

You will study the following modules:

Analogue and Digital Electronics
Control and Instrumentation
Design Tools & Techniques
Electrical Engineering
Electrical Principles
Engineering Quality Management
Engineering Environmental Management
Inspection and Testing
Lighting Applications
Mathematics for Engineers
Mechanical Engineering Science
Study Skills and Professional Development
Work Based Project

Entry requirements

To apply for the course, you will need a relevant Level 3 Diploma in Engineering, AVCE full award or Advanced GNVQ in Engineering. Alternatively, you will have A Levels in Maths and an appropriate Science subject. We will happily consider mature students with industry experience or evidence of alternative qualifications that are equivalent to those stated above.

If you already have a recognized, relevant Level 4 qualification, you may be eligible for direct entry onto the second year of study, providing you are able to pass a Level 3 Math’s test and have a Level 2 qualification in English.  It is essential that you have the backing of an industrial company, as majority of the work and assignments on the course are related to industry and you will need industrial support for evidence for assignments and a valid, structured industrial project for the second year of the course.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of group assignments, individual projects and internally set examinations. Your work will be assessed by the College and externally validated by Coventry University.

What next?

After completing your Foundation Degree, you may want to progress onto the final year of the BSc Engineering, which can be studied on an evening basis, or a BEng Electrical/Electronic Degree, which can be studied on a part-time day basis at Coventry University.

As an Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for installing and testing electrical equipment and systems, in fields ranging from transportation and lighting to wiring systems, power generation and transmission.
