HND in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering
Apply for this courseAbout this course
Is this course right for me?
From digital systems and power to telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a fast-paced industry that covers a range of exciting areas. If you have an analytical and creative mind, and dream of a career on the cutting edge of new technology, then this is the sector for you! Our HND in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering is a nationally recognised qualification that is equivalent to the first two years of university study. It will provide you with underpinning theory of the principles, methods and practical skills you need to succeed in a professional or management role.
What makes WCT the best?
Our excellent links with employers in Worcestershire and the surrounding areas gives you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and advice from people already working in the industry. You will benefit from various pathway options that allow you to specialise in an area of interest that is relevant to your future career. Our natural progression routes between different programmes and courses make it easier for you to improve your qualifications and enhance your learning experience.
How will I learn?
Our course offers a full-time programme of study lasting two years, consisting of College attendance for three days a week. We offer an exciting, varied and challenging approach to learning that mixes theoretical study with a strong vocational element.
What will I be doing?
Our course offers two pathways of study in either Electrical Engineering or Electronic Engineering. The Electrical route will enable you to specialise in Electrical Power, whilst the Electronic route will cover the study of Microprocessors, Combinational & Sequential Logic.
In your first year, you will gain underpinning knowledge of fundamental engineering subjects, such as Maths, Science and Business. You will learn about health and safety principles, robot technology, programmable logic controllers and different processes of design. Your first year also covers planning and scheduling techniques, including factory layouts and inventory control.
In your second year, you will develop the depth of understanding you need to enter the workplace at a professional or senior level. You will develop your technical skills through the study of subjects such as Business Improvement Techniques, Advanced Machine Tools, Hydraulics and Pneumatics (using Automation Studios simulation software and practical boards), CAD/CAM (using Autocad and Mastercam), Mechatronics and Quality Assurance. The application of the theory you learnt in your first year to a range of practical activities will give you the opportunity to use your higher thinking and cognitive skills. You will also have the opportunity to complete a project management module, which will help with the planning and control of your individual engineering project.
Entry requirements
You will need one of the following to apply for the course:
Assessment
You will be assessed on an ongoing basis through assignment-based coursework, although there are some internally set tests. You will be assessed by the College and then externally moderated by BTEC Edexcel.
What next?
After completing your HND, you may wish to progress to university and ‘top-up’ your qualification to a BEng (Hons) Electrical/Electronic Engineering degree programme.
If you choose to work in Electrical Engineering, you will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and supervising the production of electrical equipment and systems, in fields ranging from transportation and lighting to wiring systems, power generation and transmission. Alternatively, you could choose to specialise in Electronics Engineering, where you will focus more on communications, signal processing, and other electronics systems.
Regardless of the route you choose, you will find jobs available in a broad spectrum of industries including Transportation, Manufacturing and Construction, Power, Utilities and Building Services, in areas such as lighting, heating and ventilation. Future opportunities for Electrical Engineers are looking bright, with rewarding work available in the burgeoning fields of alternative energy, biomedical technology, and personal technology. The increasing need for secure, cost-effective and environmentally efficient energy solutions like solar and wind power has also opened up an increasing amount of engineering jobs in areas such as wind turbine energy and power system security.
