Is this course right for me?
Manufacturing Engineering is a dynamic industry that offers well-paid opportunities for critical thinkers with bags of initiative. If you want a career researching and developing new processes, machines and equipment, then this is the course for you! Our HND will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need to progress to a technical, professional or managerial career.
What makes WCT the best?
Our excellent links with employers in Worcestershire and the surrounding areas gives you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and advice from people already working in the industry. You will benefit from various pathway options that allow you to specialise in an area of interest that is relevant to your future career. Our natural progression routes between different programmes and courses make it easier for you to improve your qualifications and enhance your learning experience.
How will I learn?
Our course offers a full-time programme of study lasting two years, consisting of College attendance for three days a week. We offer an exciting, varied and challenging approach to learning that mixes theoretical study with a strong vocational element.
What will I be doing?
Your first year will build the foundations of your knowledge of the sector; you will study Maths, Science and Business, and cover processes of design, planning and scheduling techniques, and important Health and Safety principles. You will gain technical knowledge of robotics and programmable logic controllers, factory layouts and inventory control.
In your second year, you will continue to develop your cognitive skills by applying your theoretical knowledge to practical projects. You will develop your technical skills through the study of subjects such as Hydraulics and Pneumatics (using Automation Studios simulation software and practical boards), CAD/CAM (using Autocad and Mastercam), Mechatronics and Quality Assurance. You will also have the opportunity to complete a project management module, which will help with the planning and control of your individual engineering project
Entry requirements
You will need one of the following to apply for the course:
Assessment
You will be assessed on an ongoing basis through assignment-based coursework, although there are some internally set tests. You will be assessed by the College and then externally moderated by BTEC Edexcel.
What next?
After completing your HND, you may wish to progress to university and ‘top-up’ your qualification to a BEng (Hons) in an Engineering degree programme.
As a Mechanical Engineer, your technical expertise and skills will be valued across many industries, including food and drink, oil, plastics, biotechnology, manufacture, aerospace, automotive and pharmaceuticals. Regardless of the industry you choose to work in, you can expect to be designing new systems and processes, examining equipment, maintaining records and managing budgets. You will work alongside Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and other professionals such as Accountants and Human Resources Personnel.
