About this course

Is this course right for me?

As one of the oldest and broadest disciplines in the sector, Mechanical Engineering has plenty to offer for future professionals of the industry. Whether you want to work in design and development, or plan on specialising in operations, maintenance or analysis, our HND will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need to progress to a technical, professional or managerial career.

What makes WCT the best?

Our excellent links with employers in Worcestershire and the surrounding areas gives you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and advice from people already working in the industry. You will benefit from various pathway options that allow you to specialise in an area of interest that is relevant to your future career. Our natural progression routes between different programmes and courses make it easier for you to improve your qualifications and enhance your learning experience.

How will I learn?

Our course offers a full-time programme of study lasting two years, consisting of College attendance for three days a week. We offer an exciting, varied and challenging approach to learning that mixes theoretical study with a strong vocational element.

What will I be doing?

Your first year will build the foundations of your knowledge of the sector; you will study Maths, Science and Business, and gain vital knowledge of important Health and Safety principles. You will gain technical knowledge of robotics and programmable logic controllers, alongside the theory of Mechanical Principles, with a focus on stress, strain, dynamics and statics.

In your second year, you will continue to develop your cognitive skills by applying your theoretical knowledge to practical projects. You will develop your technical skills through the study of subjects such as Hydraulics and Pneumatics (using Automation Studios simulation software and practical boards), CAD/CAM (using Autocad and Mastercam), Mechatronics and Quality Assurance. You will also have the opportunity to complete a project management module, which will help with the planning and control of your individual engineering project.

Entry requirements

You will need one of the following to apply for the course:

  • A relevant BTEC National/ Extended Certificate/ Diploma in Engineering.
  • A full AVCE award or Advanced GNVQ in Engineering.
  • A levels in Mathematics or an appropriate Science, with evidence that other subjects have been studied to an appropriate level.
  • Related work experience or qualifications deemed equivalent to those above
  • Assessment

You will be assessed on an ongoing basis through assignment-based coursework, although there are some internally set tests. You will be assessed by the College and then externally moderated by BTEC Edexcel.

    What next?

After completing your HND, you may wish to progress to university and ‘top-up’ your qualification to a BEng (Hons) Electrical/Electronic Engineering degree programme.

There are job opportunities available for Mechanical Engineers in practically every field of work, including transport, health, defence, manufacturing, entertainment, finance, publishing, building, design and research, to name but a few!

You could choose to specialise in the aerospace, defence or energy industries or you may want to work in the manufacturing of industrial and domestic products, drugs, furniture or food. There is also the potential to work in design, research and development, marketing, sales, production management and quality.
