About this course

Is the course right for me?

If you are an entry-level learner who would like to live by yourself and take responsibility for your own welfare, then our course can help! Our Independent Living Skills programme can help you develop the knowledge you need to keep safe, be healthy, look after your own home and deal with different problems. We will help you gain important skills that you will use every day of your life. From catching a bus and cooking a meal to going shopping and handling your own money, our course will help you become more confident so that you can take control of your life and begin to live independently.

What will I be doing?

Our course will help you make the most of your leisure time and teach you how to become more active and access events and services in your local community. You will also learn important social and personal skills so that you can build relationships and get on well with other people.

In our Healthy Living sessions, you will learn about diet and exercise, while our Personal Presentation unit will teach you how to dress well for work and maintain good levels of personal hygiene. You will also learn important English, Maths and IT skills.

Depending on your ability and progress, you may be able to achieve a Certificate in Employability, Personal and Social Development, or an OCR in Functional English, Maths and IT. By the end of the course, you will be more confident, be able to take responsibility for your own actions and know your personal rights.

Entry requirements

Our course is aimed at entry-level learners who have specific learning difficulties such as Aspergers and need support to develop their own independence.

We welcome referrals from mainstream schools, special schools, other colleges, Connexions, Social Services, parents or carers

Assessment

You will work with your tutor to set your own personal targets and assess your needs. If you choose to study for a qualification, you will complete a folder of your work. Your tutor will mark your work and meet with you to give you feedback.

What next?

Our course will help you develop the skills you need to move onto supported work or independent living. If you successfully complete the course, you may like to progress to our Skills for Work course.
