About this course

Is the course right for me?

Would you like to get a job but don't feel ready to enter the world of work? Do you need help to develop your personal, social and employment skills? If this sounds like you, then Skills for Work will get you on the right track. Our course offers a personal learning programme that allows you to make your own choices and work towards your own learning needs.

What will I be doing?

You will learn through a mix of class lessons and personal tutorials. You can choose to study a range of subjects, including Health and Safety, Leisure and Tourism, Woodwork, Brickwork, Hair and Beauty, and Painting and Decorating. If you enjoy cooking and want to learn about food hygiene then Hospitality and Catering could be one of your options. Or why not choose Arts and Media and express your own feelings and ideas through drawing, photography or mixed media?

In addition to these options, you will also improve your Maths, English and ICT skills, and learn how to be healthy, prepare for work, build relationships, work as a team and manage your own money.

Depending on your ability and progress, you may be able to achieve a Diploma in Skills for Working Life, Certificate in Personal and Social Development, or an OCR in Functional English, Maths and IT.

Entry requirements

Our course is aimed at entry-level learners who need support to develop their functional, personal and employability skills.

We welcome referrals from mainstream schools, special schools, other colleges, Connexions, Social Services, parents or carers. We also welcome self-referral.

Assessment

You will work with your tutor to set your own personal targets and assess your needs. If you choose to study for a qualification, you will complete a folder of your work. Your tutor will mark your work and meet with you to give you feedback.

What next?

Our course is intended to help you develop the skills you need to progress into work or further education. After completing the course, you may like to progress to our Job Path course or another Foundation Learning option.
