About this course

This course is for learners with learning disabilities who need close and caring support to enable them to take advantage of an exciting, personalised learning programme.

The Lifeskills course provides learners with the opportunity to develop their functional (English, Maths and IT) skills alongside their personal and vocational skills. This curriculum is planned to help learners develop the skills needed to experience supported work or independent living wherever possible.

Success is accredited by NOCN and reflects the three strands of the new Foundation Learning Curriculum. This means that learners on this course will work towards skills in English, Maths, IT, personal skills (e.g. healthy living) and some vocational areas e.g. catering, horticulture, enterprise.

The course leads to the following qualification:

  • NOCN Award/Certificate/Diploma in Personal Progress 

Learners on this course will be enabled by members of the learning support team throughout the day, including break times.

Individual support from the college speech and language therapist is also available for those needing more detailed help with their communication needs.

Learners on this course will receive reviews of their progress throughout the year to assess achievement, general performance and progression for the following year.

Your personalised learning programme will be built around your needs and aspirations and will include elements of the following three areas:

Functional skills including:

  • Numeracy (including Money Skills)
  • Communication Skills
  • Computing

Personal and Social Development Skills including:

  • Cookery
  • Healthy Living/Domestic Skills

Entry requirements

  • This course is aimed at pre-entry and entry level learners. Referral is welcomed from relevant agencies including mainstream schools, special schools, other colleges, Connexions and Social Services. 
     
    Referral from parents and carers is also welcome. 

Assessment

  • All learners on this course will receive an ongoing assessment of their needs, with personal targets set to promote learning and support progression.
    Formal assessment for the qualifications are portfolio or assignment based.

What next?

Students achieving a reasonable level of independence can progress to Independent Living Skills
