Is the course right for me?
Are you a caring and active person who enjoys working with children? If you choose our Diploma in Caring for Children Level 1, you will learn the basic skills and knowledge you need to start your career in childcare. Not only will you get to enjoy playing and having fun with children, but you will also learn how to help them to develop and discover the world around them. Children will use some of the skills they learn with you, such as how to get on with other children, for the rest of their lives and working in childcare will provide you with an interesting, diverse and rewarding career.
What will I be doing?
Our course mixes classroom learning with hands-on experience, meaning that you will be able to put into practice the skills that you learn at College during your work experience placements in nurseries, playgroups, infant classes and crèches.
You will gain a basic understanding of how children learn and how you can support their development through a range of play activities, such as music, reading and creative play. You could be helping children to develop number and language skills through activities such as counting games and storytelling or helping them learn life skills such as dressing themselves and using cutlery.
You will learn how to keep children safe and healthy, and support their diet and nutritional needs. You will also learn how to feed, dress and bath babies, change nappies and prepare baby bottles or food.
Alongside your main programme of study, you will develop your English, Maths and IT skills, and learn how to communicate with children and colleagues.
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements, but you will need to be interested in Early Years, passionate about working with children and keen to learn new skills. You will also need to provide a satisfactory reference and undertake a CRB check before starting the course; this is a Disclosure of Criminal Background for those with Access to Children and Vulnerable Adults and is needed to enable students to participate in work experience.
Assessment
You will complete a folder of your work. Your tutor will mark your work and offer you feedback to help you improve your studies. During your work placements, you will be marked on your ability to observe and care for children.
What next?
Before working with children, you will need to complete a Level 2 course or our Diploma for the Children and Young Peoples Workforce Level 3. You may also want to consider our Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 2.
With further training, you may wish to become a qualified Nursery Worker, Play Leader, Childminder, Nanny or Au Pair.
