Is the course right for me?
Are you positive, caring and enthusiastic? Would you like a job where you can make a real difference to people's lives? If you choose to work in Early Years or Childcare, you will be playing a crucial role in shaping the lives of our future generations. This is a career to be proud of and our National Programme in Children's Care, Learning and Development will help you turn your dream job into reality. Our course offers you the practical skills and knowledge you need to gain Level 3 Qualified Practitioner status, which will enable you to begin work immediately in a childcare, residential care or special needs role. It will even help you progress to higher education. Perfect if you are thinking of training as a Teacher, Nurse or Social Worker.
What will I be doing?
Our two-year course offers a combination of theory and practical learning.
You will study all aspects of childcare, learning and development, including how to promote wellbeing and resilience, and safeguard the children in your care. You will develop a range of learning and play activities, and learn how to promote equality and diversity. You will also develop your communication skills so that you can interact successfully with children, parents and colleagues. Some of your units will be practical, such as Positive Environments, which teaches you how to bathe and change babies. Others will be more theoretical and may involve studying children's behaviour or discussing the impact of social policy on childcare and development.
You will attend four different placements during the course and complete a minimum of 800 hours of work experience. You can choose to specialise in age ranges 0-1, 1-3, 3-5 or 5-8 and will have the choice of different childcare settings including nurseries, reception classes, pre-schools and childminders. You can also choose to work in a special needs setting.
Entry requirements
You will need five GCSE grades A-C, including English Language or a Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development Level 2 or Health and Social Care Level 2.
You will also need to complete a CRB check, attend an interview and provide satisfactory references.
Assessment
You will be assessed on an ongoing basis through various methods including written exams, case studies and presentations. During your work placement, you will complete a portfolio of work that will show how you have planned and carried out activities with children and observed their development.
What next?
Your qualification will enable you to work with children in a variety of roles, such as Children's Centre Worker, Nursery Nurse, Private Nanny, Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Children's Healthcare Assistant or Childminder. It will also equip you for further study and you may like to consider our HND Advanced Practice in Working with Children and Families or a degree in Teaching, Nursing or Social Work.
