Is the course right for me?
Are you positive, caring and enthusiastic? Whether you have recently completed your Diploma in Caring for Children Level 1 or are new to the sector and keen to learn new skills, our course offers a fascinating insight into the areas of childcare, learning and development. Our Level 2 Diploma is the minimum qualification needed to work in this sector, which means you will be able to begin working with children as soon as you finish your last assignment!
What will I be doing?
Our course combines classroom lessons with hands-on learning. You will study a range of childcare topics, including communication skills, and health and safety. You will learn how children play and how to keep them safe through preparing and maintaining secure and hygienic play environments. You will also gain an understanding of childhood development, from birth up to sixteen years of age! This will involve looking at different aspects of growth, including physical, intellectual, emotional and social development.
You will complete a number of work placements that will help you gain practical experience of interacting with children. This will include a minimum of 300 hours of work experience during the course. We will help you find suitable placements in a range of different childcare settings including nurseries, reception classes, pre-schools and childminders. Your tutor will visit you during this time to offer support and to assess your progress.
Entry requirements
You will need a minimum of two GCSE grades A-C, preferably with English Langauge, or a relevant qualification such as a Diploma in Child Care, Learning and Development Level 1 with a Merit grade. You will need to be interested in Early Years Work and show the motivation to succeed on the course. Ahead of starting the course, you will need to provide a satisfactory reference and complete a CRB check; this is a Disclosure of Criminal Background for those with Access to Children and Vulnerable Adults and is needed to enable students to participate in work experience.
Assessment
You will complete a portfolio of your work, which will include written tasks, presentations and discussions. Your tutor will mark your work and offer you feedback to help you improve your studies. During your work experience placement, you will also complete an assignment and keep a written record of the practical activities that you have carried out with children.
What next?
Your Level 2 Diploma qualifies you to work in a childcare setting under supervision, in a role such as Nursery Assistant or Pre-School Assistant. It will also equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to progress to further study and you may want to consider one of our Level 3 qualifications in Children's Care, Learning and Development, the Children and Young Peoples Workforce or Health and Social Care.
