Whether you are a school leaver or looking to change profession, our course will introduce you to the world of cookery and provide you with the skills and training you need to get a head start in the industry.

What will I be doing?

At our on-site restaurant, Spires, you will carry out a range of practical activities in food preparation. You will learn different cooking methods, such as boiling, poaching, steaming, stewing, baking, roasting, grilling and frying. You will also learn how to prepare cold foods, pre-prepared foods and food for special diets.

In addition to practical training, you will study a variety of topics ranging from understanding menus and handling payments to the principles of bar service, health and safety, and the importance of a healthy diet.

You will have the opportunity to enter major national competitions and take part in work experience placements and trips to catering establishments.

Entry requirements

You will have a reasonable standard of secondary education, with three GCSE grades A-D in academic subjects, including English Language. You will be asked to attend an interview to show your interest in the course.
