Is this course right for me?
Are you mad on cooking and food? Do you like to work at your own pace and need support to help you achieve your goals? If the answer is yes, then this is the course for you! If you are an entry-level learner who is keen to work in the catering industry, our Hospitality Level 1 course will introduce you to the world of food preparation, cooking and service. You will learn the skills and abilities you need to move on to a Diploma course or begin work in a catering kitchen. Bon Appétit!
What will I be doing?
As part of our Foundation Learning Programme, our course will help you develop the basic cookery and safety skills that you need to work in the catering sector and lead an independent life. You will attend the course for up to five days a week and learn through a mix of lectures and practical sessions.
At our on-site restaurant, Spires, you will gain hands-on experience of preparing food and serving it to members of the public. You will learn how to serve drinks and prepare food products using wet and dry cooking methods. You will also learn about the principles of health and safety, healthy eating and good customer service.
In addition to practical training, we will also help you to develop the personal and social skills you need to live in the wider community and work with others. You will learn how to set your own goals, live healthily, work as part of a team and prepare for the world of work. You will also improve your Maths, English and IT skills, and begin to understand your own rights and responsibilities.
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements, but you will need to be at least 16 years old and interested in catering and the food industry. We will invite you to attend an interview to show your interest in the course.
Assessment
You will complete a number of practical tests, online multiple choice tests and short answer test papers. You will also work as part of a team with your fellow students to complete small assignments such as making a poster or leaflet. Your course tutor will be on hand to support you at all times during the course.
What next?
After completing the course, you may like to move on to our Diploma in Professional Cookery Level 2 or an apprenticeship in Catering and Cookery. Alternatively, you could choose to begin work as a Waiter, Waitress, Bar Assistant or Junior Catering Assistant.
