About this course

Is the course right for me?

Do you dream of becoming a Chef or running your own restaurant? Are you keen to get ahead in the world of catering but don't have any qualifications? This is the place to start! Our Professional Catering Foundation will introduce you to the industry and provide you with basic skills in preparing and cooking a range of different foods. By the end of the course, you will be able to work confidently and independently on a range of food projects.

What will I be doing?

You will be working toward your NVQ Level 1 Certificate in Hospitality. Working within our newly refurbished student restaurant, The View, you will gain experience of talking to customers and serving them food. You will learn how to prepare and clean tables, serve drinks and provide good customer service. You will also learn how to prepare and serve a range of different coffees in our coffee shop.

Working in the The View kitchen, you will store, prepare and cook a range of different foods in a safe and hygienic manner, including fresh salads and fruit, fish, meat, poultry, and lunch dishes such as sandwiches with hot and cold fillings.

Our course will also help you to develop your own independence and teach you how to live healthily, work as a team, look for a job, prepare for an interview and improve your Maths, English and IT skills.

You will spend four days a week (Monday - Thursday) gaining on-site practical experience and one day a week (Friday) in the classroom building your practical knowledge.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, but you will need to enjoy practical work and show an interest in the food industry. Before starting the course, we will invite you to attend an interview and take a short practical test.

Assessment

You will complete an online multiple choice test and a folder of your work that will cover the topics of food preparation, cooking and drink service. Your tutor will also observe and mark at least three of your practical tasks. You can work at your own pace and complete your assignments when you feel ready.

What next?

After completing the course, you may like to move on to our Diploma in Professional Cookery Level 1 or 2, or our Job Path course, which will help you to develop your work skills even further. Alternatively, you could choose to begin work as a Waiter, Waitress, Bar Assistant or Junior Catering Assistant.
