About this course
The programme is taught by specialists in criminal law:
- To give students a knowledge of the science of Criminology and Criminal Law
- To develop confidence in handling a variety of source materials in the study of Law and Criminology
- To develop other skills, such as team-working and oral communication skills, through the study of Law and Criminology
Year One:
- English Legal System and Professional and Scholarly Practice and Career Development: how the law works, personnel of the law, the administration of justice. Development of skills such as legal research, professional legal writing, presentations and negotiation.
- Criminal Law: the main offences against persons and property and defences to a crime.
Year Two:
- Criminal Justice and Sentencing: the process of investigation into an offence from arrest to trial and sentencing.
- Criminology: the science of crime – why do people commit crimes? Causes of crime, criminal statistics, and theories of punishment.
The course is taught by lectures, supported by audio-visual aids and group discussion. The emphasis of the course is on enjoying learning about law and criminology through the variety of assignments, the range of speakers and the interaction within the group.
Entry requirements
1 A level or equivalent.
No formal qualifications are required for mature students but it is important to discuss each application individually to ensure that it is the correct course for you.
Assessment
This is by assignments and examinations. If it is a long time since you have undertaken work such as this, then do not worry!
The College staff have had many years experience in teaching part-time students and they will always be pleased to help you.
What next?
This course can lead to employment in the justice sector in, for example, probation work or work with particular types of offenders or in the courts.
You can progress to a BA in Legal Studies/Criminology, which will take a further 2 years of full-time study or 3 years part-time.
