Is the course right for me?
From recording and production to live sound and multimedia, music technology covers a range of exciting subject areas and our Extended Diploma will introduce you to this dynamic industry. You will have the opportunity to work with the latest studio, live and computer-based technologies, and develop the skills you need to progress to higher education or a job in the industry. You will even have the chance to produce your own music!
What will I be doing?
You will learn about the academic and technical aspects of Music Technology, starting with an overview of the different job roles, from sound engineers to instrument makers, that make up the music industry.
You will study sound equipment, computer software, the principles of acoustic sound, and performance techniques such as timing, tone and control. You will also develop the listening skills you will need to perform, compose, DJ or work in a recording studio with live sound.
Entry requirements
You will need five GCSE grades A-C in academic subjects, including a minimum grade C in English and Maths. You do not need to have any prior music qualifications but you will have to pass an audition, written test and interview to demonstrate your competency for the course and your knowledge of your own instrument or singing style.
Assessment
You will be assessed through ongoing written and practical tests and given either a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade.
What next?
Your Extended Diploma will help you develop a career in sound engineering, music production or another area of the industry such as performance or composition.
You may wish to progress to our Foundation Degree in Popular Music Technology, which we deliver in partnership with Glamorgan University. Alternatively, you may like to consider another music-related university degree.
