To succeed in this industry you need to be hard working, thick skinned and highly trained. With our HNC in Performing Arts, you will receive an education fit for the finest in the industry. Our course offers a combination of vocational and academic learning that will equip you with the practical skills and technical knowledge you need to succeed in the world of film, television and theatrical performance.

Our Performing Arts department offers a professional, friendly and exciting place to study. The St. Andrews' building is home to our specialist theatre, which boasts a state-of-the-art computerised lighting system, sound systems, and multiple stage and seating positioning. Our versatile theatre layout offers theatre-in-the-round, thrust stage, promenade and proscenium staging options, alongside a 95 seat collapsible auditorium. So whether you want to stage a Shakespearian tragedy or improvisational comedy, we can create the stage to suit!
As a Performing Arts student, you will benefit from three other rehearsal spaces including a mirrored dance studio with a 42" plasma TV and state-of-the-art sound system.
How will I learn?
Our course offers a full-time programme of study lasting one year. We offer an exciting, varied and challenging approach to learning that mixes theoretical and practical study with a strong vocational element. You will be encouraged to engage with ideas at both a creative and academic level.
What will I be doing?
Our HNC will help you develop a broad understanding of theatre whilst also carrying out more focused studies in topics of your choice.
You will study the following modules:
Development of Acting Skills – this module will help you develop high levels of character acting and introduce you to depth and technique.
Musical Theatre Performance – our strong approach to theatrical performance covers West End and Broadway performances.
Preparation, Process and Production – teaching you first class rehearsal and performance techniques.
Singing Techniques and Styles – this module will take your vocal ability to a professional level.
Theatre in Education – you will study material created for touring schools and colleges.
Commercial Dance – introduces you to modern, street, commercial dance and audition techniques.
Creative Arts Professional Practice – will help you understand how to create perfect CVs and headshots, and find an agent. In short, how to survive as an actor!
Dance for Musical Theatre – study of specific dance practitioners and their work.
Historical Context in Performing Arts – an in-depth study of the history of theatre.
Singing for Musical Theatre – you will study specific West End techniques and musical theatre styles.

Entry requirements
You will need three A Levels, preferably including relevant subjects, an Extended Diploma in Performing Arts or a similar qualification to apply for the course. You will be invited to an interview and an audition where you will be asked to perform two contrasting monologues (contemporary and classical). If you are a mature student, please apply as normal and we will take your experience and qualifications into account.
Assessment
You will be assessed at regular intervals throughout the course. We place considerable emphasis on production and performance work and you will complete evaluative analysis’s of performances and research.

Our course will prepare you for university or employment within the performing arts sector. If you wish to continue your education, you may want to consider one of the following:
- Drama/Dance/Music School and Professional training
- University BA (Hons) in Drama, Dance, Theatre
Possible careers could include Stage Management, Choreography, Film, Television and Theatre work, Marketing and Promotion and Technical Theatre. You could become an Actor, Dancer or even Theatre Director!
