About this course

Is the course right for me?

Do you dream of becoming a Biologist or Research Scientist? Are you passionate about scientific innovations? Our HNC in Applied Biology will develop your studies in a range of exciting areas such as Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Microbiology, to name just a few! Our course is aimed at those with an advanced level background in the subject and will equip you with the knowledge, understanding and skills you need to succeed in biologically based industries.

What makes WCT the best?

During the course, you will have the opportunity to develop a range of skills, techniques, personal qualities and attributes essential for success in today’s highly competitive workplace.

How will I learn?

Our course offers a part-time programme of study lasting two years, giving you the flexibility to gain work experience or earn money to support your studies. We offer an exciting, varied and challenging approach to learning that mixes theoretical and practical study with hands-on laboratory work using up-to-date equipment and IT applications.

What will I be doing?

Our course covers a range of exciting topics such as cell biology, immunology and genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology, human physiology, nutrition, microbiology, embryology and organic chemistry.

In order to assist your practical study, you will learn important lab techniques and the principles of data handling. You will also investigate environmental studies and complete your own project, which will give you the opportunity to carry out independent research.

Your first year is based on analytical skills and will teach you how to analyse scientific data and information, alongside teaching you important laboratory management skills. The topics you will focus on in this year include infectious diseases and the physiology of cellular systems in animals.

Entry requirements

To apply for the course, you will need an A Level in an appropriate Science subject or National Diploma/ Certificate in Science. We will happily consider mature students with industry experience or evidence of alternative study in a related area.

Assessment

Our course is assessed by coursework assignments and there is a strong emphasis on practical activities.

What next?

After successful completing your first year, you can progress to the second year of study. Our HNC is equivalent to the first year of university.  After completing the course, you may wish to consider a HND or degree course, followed by a postgraduate qualification if you want to work in a research-based role.

As a Science professional, you could choose to work in a variety of environments, including Medical, Food and Environmental. You could work for a pharmaceutical company, an academic institution or a non-profit organisation. Possible job roles include Research Scientist, Haematologist, Dental Technician, Medical Researcher, Nurse or Biologist.

However, your curious and investigative mind will be of value to employers in all industry sectors, not just in Science. For example, many Biology graduates will have very successful careers in commerce, industry, working for the civil service, or in library and information management.
