Apply for this courseAbout this course
Is the course right for me?
Chemistry is a fascinating subject that touches every area of our lives; from the food we eat to the clothes we wear, and even the waste we dispose of! Our HNC in Applied Chemistry will develop your studies in a range of exciting areas such as Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry and Mathematics, to name just a few! Our recognised and respected qualification will help you gain advanced practical skills and an in-depth understanding of various topics to prepare you for further study or work in a range of industries.
What makes WCT the best?
During the course, you will have the opportunity to develop a range of skills, techniques, personal qualities and attributes essential for success in today’s highly competitive workplace.
How will I learn?
Our course offers a part-time programme of study lasting two years, giving you the flexibility to gain work experience or earn money to support your studies. We offer an exciting, varied and challenging approach to learning that mixes theoretical and practical study with hands-on laboratory work using up-to-date equipment and IT applications.
What will I be doing?
Our course covers a range of exciting topics including the core areas of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, as well as specialist units in environmental and industrial chemistry. This selection reflects the strong industrial background of our lecturing staff.
Your first year will cover the structure of molecules, quantitative and analytical techniques and synthesis skills in the laboratory. You will also carry out a work-based assignment and have the opportunity to develop your skills in lab preparation, presentation and IT.
In your second year, you will focus on Molecular Modelling, Physical Chemistry and Maths for Chemists. You will also be introduced to Polymer and Environmental Chemistry and complete a personal assignment, which will give you the opportunity to carry out independent research.
Entry requirements
To apply for the course, you will need an A Level in an appropriate Science subject or National Diploma/ Certificate in Science. We will happily consider mature students with industry experience or evidence of alternative study in a related area.
Assessment
Our course is assessed by coursework assignments and there is a strong emphasis on practical activities.
What next?
After successful completing your first year, you can progress to the second year of study. Our HNC is equivalent to the first year of university. After completing the course, you may wish to consider a HND or degree course, followed by a postgraduate qualification if you want to work in a research-based role.
The career options in Chemistry are practically endless! After your HNC, you are likely to gain employment in lab work; washing glassware or assisting at schools with lab preparation. If you complete a university degree, you will be able to work with less supervision, in a role running equipment or preparing chemicals.
However, a Master’s degree or Ph.D in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering will open the door to virtually any job you can think of, from food testing to space exploration! You could choose to design and supervise research programs, specialise in consultancy or even get a job influencing major government policy. Career options you may want to consider include Agriculture, Forensics, Medicine, Law, Pharmaceuticals, Software Design, Teaching, Technical Writing, Textiles or Waste Management.
