About this course

Is the course right for me?

Would you like a career in a dynamic and inspiring industry? You may already be working and eager to climb the career ladder or new to Sport and about to begin your journey. Either way, our Foundation Degree (FdA) in Sport (Tourism) Coaching and Development will equip you with the essential skills and knowledge you need to kick-start your dream career in Sport and Tourism. With the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics around the corner, the world is focusing on the UK as a leader in new sporting achievement. This is your chance to get involved in the industry and really make an impact!

What makes WCT the best?

We understand the ever-increasing demands on your time and finances. That's why our full time programme is run over two days a week. This unique method of delivery allows you to gain industry experience and an income at the same time!

We are dedicated to providing you with the best possible opportunities to experience local and national sports resources. Visits to the London 2012 site, Cardiff's Sports Village, national stadia and outdoor activity centres are just a few of the trips that we organise to help enhance your learning experience.

Our FdA in Sport (Tourism) is validated by the University of Worcester and awarded by the University. This gives the FdA credence and allows you to progress both academically and vocationally.

How will I learn?

Our course is offered on a full and part time basis. The full time course runs for two days a week, a Monday and Tuesday, for two years. The part time route is flexible and can be completed on either day over a three or four year period. We emphasise a 'theory into practice' model of learning that enables you to relate what you learn in class to 'real world' examples. We want you to recognise the skills you have and understand where to use them in the workplace.

What will I be doing?

You will study a variety of subjects such as Sport Tourism, Marketing in Sport, Event Management, Outdoor Adventurous Activities and Practical Coaching.

In addition to lectures and tutorials, you will put the skills you have learnt into action through a number of modules such as Work Based Activities and Event Management, where you will have the opportunity to plan and run a local event within a financial budget.

Additional Costs

Due to the vocational nature of the course, visits are essential part of the curriculum. We recommend that you should aim to budget around £170 per academic year for these visits.

For more information, please contact Adrian Price on 01905 725654

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of 120 UCAS points to apply for the course. This can be from sports related qualifications, such as a Level 3 Diploma in Sport or an A level in Physical Education. Although recommended, it is not essential to have GCSEs in Maths and English Language and you will have the option to complete these qualifications alongside your Foundation Degree. We will also consider applicants over 21 years of age who have no formal qualifications but have relevant experience in the industry.

Assessment

You will be assessed through written assignments, individual projects, individual and group presentations and time constrained assessments. You will also meet up regularly with your tutor to discuss personal progress and plan your studies.

What next?

Career Opportunities

There are many career opportunities for you to choose from in the Fitness industry.  90% of our graduates continue with their studies by topping up their qualification to BA/BSc Hons.  Careers in event management, sports development, coaching, teaching (private and public sector), operations management (sports venues) are all possible jobs for our students.  With the approaching 2012 London Olympics/Paralympics more interest will be raised in the industry and more employment opportunities will arise as more of the population become involved in more fitness related activities.

Progression

Our course provides a natural progression onto the second year of the BSc Hons in Sports Studies at the University of Worcester and 90% of our students choose to this option to top up their qualification to a full degree. If you gain an A grade in your FdA, you can apply for the third year of the degree programme.

Although the University of Worcester offers a natural progression pathway, a variety of other universities will also accept second and third year applications from our students onto a sports related programme.
