Who should attend

Suitable for people who direct support for teaching and learning in any type of school primary, secondary schools, special and pupil referral units.

Course Content

To achieve the full qualification, candidates must attain a minimum of 44 credits in total, comprising all the mandatory units and the remaining credits will be achieved by selecting a minimum 12 credits from each of the optional units.

The Learning and Skills Development Officer will provide support and guidance in selecting the appropriate units.

Mandatory Units

  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults

  • Promote children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • Support assessment for learning

  • Understand how to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people

Group A

  • Plan and deliver learning activities under the direction of a teacher
  • Support literacy development

  • Provide information and advise to young people

Group E

  • Assist in the administration of medication
  • Invigilate tests and examination
  • Lead an extra-curricular activity
  • Maintain learner records
  • Monitor and maintain curriculum resources
  • Organise travel for children and young people
  • Supervise children and young people on journeys, visits and activities outside of the setting
  • Work in partnership with parents to engage them with their children’s learning and development in school

Group F

  • Work with other practitioners to support children and young people
  • Plan, allocate and monitor the work of a team
  • Provide leadership and direction for own area of responsibility
  • Set objectives and provide support for team members
  • Support learning and development within own area of responsibility
  • Team working

Assessment - The qualification is achieved by the production of a portfolio of evidence, which proves job competence (this includes assessments in the workplace) and a knowledge and understanding of the role of the teaching/classroom assistant.
