Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 is upon us again and this year Worcester College of Technology, the First Further Education College in the Midlands to receive Official Fairtrade Status, celebrated by giving out free hot drinks in association with Whittards of Chelsea, as well as showing off Fairtrade beauty products from Boots, in Bells Square, Crowngate on Wednesday 3rd March.
Members of staff from the Colleges EcoCampus Environmental Team were on hand to talk about Fairtrade and answer any questions. Members of the public were invited to sign a Fairtrade pledge to commit them to buying Fairtrade products instead of their usual brands. Alex Gwinn, co-ordinator of the event, was really pleased with the amount of public interest for the Fairtrade pledge having received over 90 pledges from the public to swap their usual products for Fairtrade products. Alex said of the response, “Fairtrade is a way of life now for many consumers and the small commitment to swap your usual brand for a Fairtrade one not only ensures the highest quality but gives others, worse off than ourselves, the means to work their way out of poverty.”
“Fairtrade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for producers and workers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalized by the conventional trading system. If fair access to markets under better trade conditions would help them to overcome barriers to development, they can join Fairtrade.” – Fairtrade Foundation 2010
