Robert Cox, 19 has been selected to take part in the UK final plumbing skills competition after winning the midlands heat. The competition aims to encourage people across the UK to excel in their vocational skill. If successful Robert could be selected to represent the UK in the Worldskills event in 2011.
Rob joined Worcester College of Technology in September 2007, when he enrolled on a plumbing apprenticeship, since then he has successfully completed his level 2 apprenticeship and is currently working towards a level 3 advanced apprenticeship in plumbing.
From the beginning Rob showed early potential in both his practical and theory work and was selected by his tutor, Mike Hencher, to represent the College in the regional final of the HIP! UK Apprentice Plumber of the Year competition in 2009. He won £100 of hand tools and in the same year represented the College again at the Summitskills SkillPLUMB regional competition.
Following his success at these events in 2009, Rob was again selected by his tutor to take part in the SkillPLUMB competition 2010, held at Stephenson College on the 26th and 27th May 2010.
2010 is again proving to be Rob’s winning year having come first in the regional competition winning him a place in the SkillPLUMB UK final, to be held at Olympia Stadium, London, on 5th, 6th and 7th October 2010.
Tutor, Mike Hencher, said “Rob has worked extremely hard throughout the year and deserves his place in the final, well done Rob”.
If Rob is successful at the SkillPLUMB UK final he will then be entered into the selection process to represent the UK in the area of plumbing at the 41st WorldSkills competition in 2011. WorldSkills is an Olympic style event in which young people from across the world pit their ability against each other by demonstrating they can perform real-life industry challenges. The vocational skills showcased at the event range from hairdressing to catering.
