Battling through the harsh January weather 10 local students aimed to help the community by starting a garden clearance project.
The Skills for Work students, all aged between 16 and 19 and from the Worcester College of Technology, cleared away over grown vegetation and debris from a garden in St Johns. The heavy snow fall made the job more difficult than planned but residents were delighted to regain full access to their garden.
The project is supported by the Duckworth Trust a local charity aiming to conserve natural and made-made sites around the city, and also the WCH (Worcester Community Housing). They are interested in the project as many elderly residents in and around the city simply cannot maintain gardens themselves – particularly during periods of bad weather.
Skills for Work courses aim to equip students with experience and skills that will make them more desirable to employers. This group were concentrating on horticulture, conservation and forestry so this project enables them to get experience using relevant tools and working in teams.
Work experience supervisor Rebecca Arnott said the “the group performed fantastically and were enthusiastic about get the job done well, the College is very proud of their efforts.”
The project already has its next clean up scheduled for Friday 12th March in the Dines Green area of Worcester.
