Emma has worked as a Nursery Nurse at Baby Tec Nursery for almost 3 years and is soon to take on the role of Assistant Nursery Supervisor covering maternity leave. Baby tec provides care for children under the age of 3 years, for student and staff at the College. The Nursery is very busy because children are arriving throughout the day.
Shifts...
When Emma is on ‘lates’, she arrives at 9:30am. The children are already playing outside so this gives Emma the opportunity to set up her activity and get the room ready for morning snack time at 10:00am.
Job rotation...
Each week Emma takes her turn at being on ‘nappy rota’ (this means she is nominated to do all the nappies in a session) Today Emma is on ‘activity rota’, she has previously decided that the activity for today will be cooking, and has prepared the ingredients to make a fruit salad. Emma writes her activity on a planning sheet which is displayed on the wall for the parents to see. The written plan includes the learning objective for the activity.
Lunch...
When the session has finished the children go outside to play, and Emma has chance to tidy up and prepare the room ready for lunchtime. At lunch time Emma feeds a young baby his lunch before managing to get out and have her lunch break. When Emma returns she writes up the daily routine sheets, recording any important information that needs to be passed on to parents.
Routine...
At 1:30 Emma carries out her activity again with any children that missed it in the morning.
At 2:30 Emma gets drinks and biscuits ready for afternoon snacktime.
Administration...
Children start going home now so Emma needs to ensure the daily routing sheets are up to date with details of what the children have eaten and when they slept.
Preparation...
Before Emma can leave she needs to make sure the nursery is clean and tidy, the lunch boxes are ready and the cots are made fresh for the next day.
Diversity...
When Emma finishes her shift at 5pm she is both mentally and physically tired, but looks forward to her day tomorrow as no two days are ever the same.
