Liaison...
Sammy spends an hour answering e-mails and post and taking calls from students. His job involves liaising with many outside agencies as well as with lecturers and students.
Research...
Sammy usually checks the NUS websites to see if there is any further development in the National Students movement that the Colleges Students’ Union should be aware of.
Student support...
Students usually pop in between lessons to find out if their EMA has been paid for last week, as ‘it’s not in their account yet’. Sammy looks up the individual students on the website and then usually has to explain that a signature from the card is missing so no payment.
Checking up...
Sammy does a round of the entire Deansway Campus to check that posters on notice boards are all up to date, relevant and have been approved by the college.
Benefits...
Sammy takes a late lunch and pops into Spires Travel (the College Travel Agency staffed by Travel and Tourism students) to discuss hotel brochures for his Grandparents summer holiday. Spires is a member of ABTA, and is backed by Hayes Travel. Staff are given 5% discount on the cost of holidays booked through Spires.
Planning...
Sammy attends the SST (Student Services Team) meeting involving the whole of the Student Services department (Careers, Welfare, Student Finance childcare and the Student Services Manager). They discuss plans for next year’s full-time and Part-time enrolments.
Peter Robinson (Student Services Manager) informs the group that they have to complete their F-SAR (Annual Functional Self-Assessment Report & Improvement Plan) by next week.
Events...
Sammy then meets with some of the students from the Students’ Union to discuss the progress of organising the Freshers Fayre, which takes place in September. The students’ discuss which organisations they would like to invite to the event. Sammy has to book a venue for the fayre before the end of the day.
Finishing up...
Sammy spends that last bit of the day tidying his desk to make sure he's completed everything he had to for the day. He then answers any last minute e-mails or messages before heading home.
